Paul J. Dunne: 26 July 1929 – 21 January 2011

It is with great sadness that the family of Paul J. Dunne announces his passing on January 21, 2011. Our father, husband and grandfather died peacefully at Northwestern Medical Center in Chicago.

Paul was born in Fall River, Massachusetts as the son of Joseph and Mary (Kearns) Dunne. His eye for adventure led him from Durfee High School to the US Army, where his five-year service included duty in post-war Germany, travels around Europe and graduation from the Officer Candidate School.

Upon discharge, he eyed the opportunity for a business education and graduated from Bryant University in Rhode Island. It was also around this time that his eye for beauty fell on Dorothy L. McCoomb, the love of his life, whom he married in 1954. Paul and Dottie moved to Chicago in 1956 after Paul took responsibility for Midwest sales for the Robbins Company.

Paul and Dottie fell in love with the view in Duneland Beach, where they moved in 1965 and raised a family of two boys and two girls. Paul served on the board of the Duneland Beach Association and was a member of Notre Dame Parish and the Southern Shore Art Association.

Paul’s eye for design and the deal served him well for many years at the Robbins Company. He left Robbins when he bought the Plitt Company, a Chicago shellfish wholesaler, in 1979. Throughout his career, Paul’s easy charm and his ability to spot the big picture – as well the little things that make a difference – were the foundations of his success. After he sold Plitt, Paul took up photography and captured many startling images of the area he loved so well. Paul was a generous and proud father, husband and grandfather who inspired us to do our best.

He is survived by his brother Dave and sister Mary Louise, his wife Dottie, and his four children Paul (Roberta), Terry (Lisbeth), Cathy (Jeff) and Anne (Ed) as well as six grandchildren, Andy, Matt, Kristoffer, Lea, Hayden and Hannah. His brothers Owen and Joe preceded him in death.

A funeral mass to celebrate Paul’s life will be held at Notre Dame Church, 1005 Moore Road, Michigan City, on Wednesday January 26, 2011. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Southern Shore Art Association, 724 Franklin St, Michigan City, IN 46360, are welcome.

The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, will handle arrangements.

Thanks Paul, Dad, Grandpa – we continue to love and learn from you.
